The story so far
Eric Miller’s journey is the ultimate “local boy makes good” story. A standout at Woodbury High School and a recipient of the 2011 Minnesota Mr. Soccer award, Miller’s path to the pros went through Creighton University before he was selected 5th overall in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft by the Montreal Impact. After stints in Montreal and Colorado, Miller finally got his homecoming in 2018 when the Loons traded for him.
During his tenure in Saint Paul, Miller was a steadying presence during the club’s challenging early MLS years. He made 24 appearances across the 2018 and 2019 seasons, often deployed as a disciplined right-back who prioritized defensive shape and tactical positioning. Since being traded to NYCFC in mid-2019, Miller has become a staple of winning environments, spending three successful seasons with Nashville SC before finding his current home in the Pacific Northwest. In Portland, he has evolved into a versatile defensive leader, capable of filling multiple roles across the backline and serving as a mentor for the Timbers’ younger prospects.
What he brought to the pitch
Miller has built a decade-long career on the foundation of tactical intelligence and professional consistency. During his time with the Loons, he was often tasked with neutralizing the league’s most dangerous wingers, utilizing his 6’1” frame and excellent reading of the game to win one-on-one duels. He isn’t a “flashy” fullback who lives in the attacking third; instead, he provides the essential defensive cover that allows more adventurous teammates to push forward.
In the locker room, Eric has always been described as the “consummate professional.” His work rate and attention to detail—traits honed during his youth days with the Minnesota Thunder Academy—have allowed him to remain a starter or a primary rotation player under multiple coaching regimes. For Minnesota fans, he remains one of the greatest success stories of the state’s talent pipeline. As he begins his 33rd year, Miller continues to represent the North with the same grit and reliability that first made him a star on the fields of Woodbury.
