Former Loon Eric Miller signs new deal with Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers have officially announced that veteran defender and Minnesota native Eric Miller has signed a new contract to remain with the club through the 2026 season.

Miller originally joined Portland as a free agent in early 2023. His new deal keeps the 32-year-old at the heart of the Timbers’ defensive depth.

A journey home and back again

For many Loons fans, Miller is remembered for his homecoming in 2018 and 2019. A native of Woodbury, Miller joined Minnesota United from the Colorado Rapids midway through the 2018 season. He was a steady presence during a transitional era for the club, making 24 appearances across his two seasons in Saint Paul before being traded to New York City FC in the summer of 2019.

Since leaving Minnesota, Miller has built a reputation as one of the most reliable veteran defenders in the league, spending three successful seasons with Nashville SC (2020–2022) before finding a permanent home in the Pacific Northwest.

Why the Timbers kept him

Now in the veteran stage of his career, Miller has become a favorite of Timbers manager Phil Neville due to his professional approach and versatility.

  • Experience: With over 200 MLS appearances, Miller provides a vital veteran voice for a Portland side that is currently integrating younger talent.
  • Tactical flexibility: Whether asked to play at right-back or fill in centrally, Miller’s defensive positioning remains a core strength that allows Portland’s more aggressive attackers to push forward.
  • Consistency: Last season, he logged over 2,000 minutes and earned his 200th career MLS appearance, proving he still has plenty of fuel left in the tank.

“Eric is a consummate professional who brings invaluable experience to our defensive unit,” said Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy. “We are pleased to have him back as we continue to build for the 2026 campaign.”
