Sam Nicholson

Sam Nicholson remains a significant figure from the foundational years of Minnesota United’s MLS era. Known for his direct, high-energy style on the wings and his blistering pace, Nicholson was a key spark during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Today, he has returned to his roots in the Scottish Premiership, providing veteran quality and versatility to the Motherwell FC attack.

The vitals

  • Position: Winger
  • Birthdate: Jan. 20, 1995
  • Nationality: Scotland
  • How he joined the Loons: Signed from Heart of Midlothian in July 2017.
  • Current club: Motherwell FC (Scottish Premiership)
  • Contract status: Signed through May 31, 2026.

The story so far

Sam Nicholson arrived in the Twin Cities as a highly-rated young international, having established himself as a regular starter for Hearts in Scotland. He quickly became a fixture in the Loons’ starting eleven during the club’s inaugural MLS season, recording two goals and two assists in 20 appearances. His ability to drive at defenders and stretch the field was a vital component of the team’s early identity. In May 2018, Nicholson was traded to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for Eric Miller and $50,000 in General Allocation Money.

After two successful seasons in Colorado, Nicholson made the jump to English football, joining Bristol Rovers in 2020. He became a cult hero in Bristol, tallying 14 goals and helping the “Gas” secure a dramatic promotion to League One in 2022. He returned to the Rapids for a second stint later that year before ultimately deciding to return home to Scotland in early 2024.

Current form and tactical profile

Now 31, Nicholson has transitioned from a raw speedster into a savvy, versatile veteran. While he still possesses the ability to beat a man on the dribble, his game is now defined by his tactical intelligence and his ability to contribute defensively as a wing-back when required.

  • Return to Scotland: After initially joining Motherwell on loan in early 2024, Nicholson made the move permanent. Despite a significant patella injury that sidelined him for several months in 2024, he has shown remarkable resilience to reclaim his spot in the starting rotation.
  • 2025–2026 campaign: Nicholson has been a consistent performer in the Motherwell midfield this season, featuring prominently in their push for a top-six finish in the William Hill Premiership.
  • Versatility: His experience in various systems across MLS, the EFL, and the Scottish Premiership makes him a “utility” asset for manager Stuart Kettlewell, capable of playing on either wing or as an inverted midfielder.

The Nicholson record in Minnesota

  • MLS appearances: 20
  • MLS goals: 2
  • MLS assists: 2
  • Total pro appearances: Over 300 (Hearts, Minnesota United, Colorado Rapids, Bristol Rovers, Motherwell)
