Nicholson returns in Motherwell victory over Livingston

Motherwell deepened Livingston’s relegation fears with a comfortable 2–0 victory at the Set Fare Arena on Saturday afternoon. While Tawanda Maswanhise grabbed the headlines with a decisive first-half brace, the match also brought welcome news for the visitors in the form of Sam Nicholson‘s return to action.

The former Minnesota United winger, who has been sidelined recently with an injury, made his long-awaited comeback in the second half, helping the Steelmen see out a professional victory on the road.

Match recap

Motherwell wasted no time asserting their dominance. Just five minutes into the contest, Tawanda Maswanhise opened the scoring, nodding home a cross to give the visitors the perfect start. The Zimbabwe international was in lethal form, doubling the lead in the 28th minute with a clinical finish following a swift counter-attack orchestrated by Callum Slattery.

Livingston, currently languishing at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership, struggled to fashion a response. Despite enjoying spells of possession in the second half, they failed to test Motherwell goalkeeper Calum Ward significantly. The defeat leaves David Martindale’s side six points adrift of safety, while Motherwell solidified their grip on fourth place.

Nicholson’s return

Sam Nicholson entered the fray in the 65th minute, replacing Ibrahim Said to make his first appearance since returning from the treatment table.

  • The cameo: Nicholson was introduced to provide fresh legs and experience as Livingston attempted to push for a lifeline. Operating on the flank, he showed glimpses of his trademark pace and direct running.
  • Impact: While he didn’t get on the scoresheet, Nicholson was instrumental in managing the game in the closing stages. He won crucial fouls deep in Livingston territory—including one in the 89th minute—that allowed Motherwell to kill time and disrupt the hosts’ rhythm.
  • Fitness boost: Getting 25 minutes under his belt will be a significant boost for manager Jens Berthel Askou, who will be eager to have the 31-year-old fully fit for the business end of the season.
