The story so far

Nabi Kibunguchy arrived in Minnesota as a highly decorated college player from UC Davis, where he was named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. To ensure he received consistent professional minutes, the loons loaned him back to his hometown club, Sacramento Republic FC, for much of the 2021 season.

In 2022, Nabi became a cornerstone for the inaugural MNUFC2 squad in MLS NEXT Pro, captaining the side and scoring four goals as a dangerous target on set pieces. While he made several appearances for the first team in friendlies and U.S. Open Cup play, he eventually moved to Orlando City B in 2023. After two successful years in Florida, which included a senior MLS call-up with Orlando City SC, Nabi signed his first overseas contract with Hougang United in Singapore. His international career also took flight during this period, as he made his debut for the Kenya National Team in 2023 during World Cup qualifying.

What he brought to the pitch

Kibunguchy was a “prototypical” modern defender—boasting elite size and strength without sacrificing mobility. His greatest asset was his aerial dominance; he was frequently the tallest player on the pitch and used that advantage to clear dangerous crosses and serve as a constant threat in the opposing penalty area.

Technically, Nabi was comfortable with the ball at his feet, allowing him to play as a traditional center-back or slide into a defensive midfield role when the game required more physical presence in the center of the park. His leadership qualities were evident early on, as he often served as an emotional leader for the reserve side. While he was a fierce competitor on the field, he was known off the pitch for his commitment to financial literacy and community engagement, leaving a lasting positive impression on the Minnesota soccer community.
