The story so far

Miguel Tapias arrived in Minnesota after spending his entire early career within the CF Pachuca system. After a successful two-year loan spell at Mineros de Zacatecas, he returned to Pachuca and helped them capture the 2022 Apertura title. His move to Minnesota in early 2023 was a “no-brainer” for the coaching staff, who had been tracking him since an international friendly at Allianz Field in 2019.

Tapias made his MLS debut in a 1-0 shutout win against FC Dallas and quickly became an undisputed starter. Over his 65 appearances for the loons, he formed a formidable partnership with Michael Boxall, providing a left-footed balance to the central defense that the club had lacked. His consistent performances caught the eye of Mexican giants C.D. Guadalajara, leading to a major transfer in late 2024. He now features regularly for Chivas, continuing his career as one of the most reliable Mexican defenders in the game.

What he brought to the pitch

Tapias was best known for his “incredible leap,” a trait that allowed him to win headers against much taller strikers. Despite his 6’0″ frame, his verticality made him a weapon on both offensive and defensive set pieces—most notably seen in his game-winning header against the Colorado Rapids in 2023.

As a left-footed center-back, he was essential to the team’s build-up play, often threading passes into the midfield or switching the point of attack with ease. Defensively, he was a “quiet” operator—rarely caught out of position and possessing a high level of tactical discipline that allowed his partner, Michael Boxall, more freedom to be aggressive. His mental toughness and “blessed” work ethic (famously tattooed on his neck) made him a respected leader in the locker room and a fan favorite at Allianz Field.
