Tapias helps Chivas hold on for 2–1 win over Mazatlán

Miguel Tapias and Chivas Guadalajara kept their perfect season alive on Friday night, defeating Mazatlán FC 2–1 at Estadio El Encanto. The former Minnesota United defender entered the match as a late substitute, helping The Sacred Flock withstand a furious late rally from the hosts to secure their fifth consecutive victory in the Liga MX Clausura.

Match recap

Chivas looked dominant early, racing out to a 2–0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Efraín Álvarez (15′) and a penalty from Armando González (29′). However, the momentum shifted in the second half when Édgar Bárcenas pulled one back for Mazatlán in the 56th minute.

The final stages were tense, with Mazatlán pushing numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Chivas manager Gabriel Milito turned to his bench to lock down the result, bringing on defensive reinforcements to navigate the closing minutes.

Tapias’ performance

Miguel Tapias began the match on the bench but was called upon in the 81st minute to replace midfielder Richard Ledezma.

  • The shift: Tapias was brought on specifically to add defensive solidity as Chivas shifted to a back-five to protect their slender lead.
  • Closing it out: The 29-year-old defender made several crucial clearances and helped organize the backline during six minutes of stoppage time, ensuring Mazatlán could not find a way through for a second goal.
  • Perfect start: The win keeps Chivas at the top of the Liga MX table with a perfect 15 points from five matches.
