“Stars” era legend
Before Minnesota United became an MLS franchise, the club was built on the backs of players like Lucas Rodríguez. Signed by the NSC Minnesota Stars in 2010 after going undrafted out of college, the diminutive Argentine quickly became a fan favorite for his technical skill, creativity, and tireless work rate on the wing.
Rodríguez was a cornerstone of the 2011 squad that defied the odds to win the NASL Soccer Bowl. In a team that famously rebranded itself as the “Stars” and operated on a shoestring budget, Rodríguez provided the creative spark in midfield. He remained with the club through the transition to the “Minnesota United” branding in 2013, bridging the gap between the NSC era and the start of the Dr. McGuire ownership.
The indoor king
While he made his name outdoors in Minnesota, Rodríguez became a genuine legend in the indoor game. He spent nine seasons with the Kansas City Comets (MASL), where his close control and quick feet made him devastating on the turf.
By the time he retired from playing in 2020, he had amassed over 200 appearances and 120 goals for the Comets, earning the 2011 MISL Rookie of the Year award along the way.
Where is he now?
Lucas Rodríguez is currently an Assistant Coach for the Kansas City Current in the NWSL.
He joined the technical staff ahead of the team’s inaugural season in 2021 and has remained a constant presence on the touchline through the club’s rapid rise. He now works daily at the CPKC Stadium, helping develop some of the best talent in women’s professional soccer.
