Britton Fischer’s climb to the first team

You usually read these articles to track down former Loons scattered across the globe, but for Britton Fischer, the answer to “Where are they now?” is incredibly close to home. The 6-foot-4 center-back has officially graduated to the Minnesota United First Team and is currently suiting up for the Loons during the 2026 MLS season.

Here is a look back at Fischer’s journey from a promising youth prospect to a fully-fledged member of the main roster.

North Carolina roots

Hailing from Greenville, North Carolina, Fischer spent his youth career developing in the North Carolina FC Academy system. He signed an academy contract with the club’s USL League One squad ahead of the 2021 season, officially making his professional debut on May 22, 2021, as a late substitute in a scoreless draw against the Richmond Kickers. Between 2021 and 2022, the young defender appeared in 30 matches for North Carolina FC’s senior team.

Becoming an MNUFC2 mainstay

Fischer’s talent caught the eye of the Loons, and on February 21, 2023, he was transferred to the organization on a two-year MLS NEXT Pro contract with MNUFC2. Over the next few seasons, he became an absolute anchor on the “Twos” backline. In total, Fischer racked up 78 regular-season appearances (including 71 starts) and logged over 6,700 minutes of action for MNUFC2. He even earned a taste of First Team play in the summer of 2023, making an appearance during an international friendly against FC Kaiserslautern.

The 2025 breakthrough

Fischer’s 2025 campaign was a major turning point. After continuing his solid play with MNUFC2—making 29 appearances and logging over 2,300 minutes—his competitive First Team breakthrough finally arrived.

On May 7, 2025, Minnesota United signed Fischer to a short-term agreement ahead of a U.S. Open Cup clash against Louisville City. That very same day, he made his competitive First Team debut, stepping onto the pitch as a 67th-minute substitute to help the Loons lock down a 1–0 victory and advance in the tournament.

Where is he now?

After proving his reliability and potential on the pitch, Fischer’s hard work was rewarded. On Dec. 17, 2025, Minnesota United officially signed the 22-year-old to a First Team MLS contract running through the end of the 2026 season, with club options for 2027 and 2028.

Today, you won’t have to look far to find him. Fischer is navigating his first full season on the main roster, competing for minutes under the lights at Allianz Field right here in Saint Paul.
