Oluwaseyi makes late cameo as Villarreal secures narrow victory over Levante
Villarreal secured a crucial 1–0 away victory against Levante to strengthen their hold on third place in the La Liga standings, moving three points clear of Atletico Madrid.
Match recap
After a scoreless first half where both sides had their chances, Villarreal finally found the breakthrough just before the hour mark. In the 57th minute, Georges Mikautadze played a quick one-two combination with Nicolas Pépé and fired a shot into the bottom corner to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.
Levante pushed for an equalizer and had several opportunities deep into stoppage time, but the Villarreal defense held firm, blocking multiple late efforts to secure the clean sheet. The defeat leaves Levante struggling in 19th place and seven points deep in the relegation zone.
Oluwaseyi's performance
Former Minnesota United forward Tani Oluwaseyi was called upon in the dying moments of the match by manager Marcelino to help Villarreal cross the finish line. Tani Oluwaseyi entered the match as a substitute in the 89th minute to provide fresh legs up top and help relieve defensive pressure.
Despite his brief time on the pitch, he was actively involved in helping his side run down the clock, registering five touches during his cameo. He was perfectly accurate with his distribution, completing his only long ball attempt and making one pass into the final third. While he was dispossessed once and lost his lone ground duel, he was a physical presence in the air, winning both of his aerial duels. Crucially, he aided the defensive effort in stoppage time by recording two headed clearances to help preserve the clean sheet and secure the three points on the road.
Up next
Oluwaseyi and Villarreal will look to keep their momentum rolling and tighten their grip on a Champions League qualification spot in their next La Liga fixture.
