Venegas and Cartagines fall to Herediano 1–0 in battle for first place
Johan Venegas and CS Cartagines saw their hopes of claiming the top spot in the Costa Rican Primera División standings take a hit on Saturday night, falling 1–0 on the road against Club Sport Herediano at the Estadio Carlos Alvarado. A shocking first-minute goal from the hosts was enough to separate the two sides in a crucial Clausura clash.
Match recap
The top-of-the-table showdown started with an immediate bang. Barely a minute after the opening whistle, 18-year-old Daniel González found the back of the net to give Herediano a stunning 1–0 lead, marking his first professional goal in the top flight. The early strike forced Cartagines onto the back foot as Herediano pushed for a second, with Diego González nearly doubling the advantage later in the half when his free-kick crashed against the post.
The second half brought bizarre circumstances when a stadium power outage temporarily suspended play shortly after the restart. Once the lights came back on, Cartagines took control of the possession and dictated the tempo, pushing hard for an equalizer. However, the Herediano defense stood resolute, frustrating the visitors and holding on to secure the 1–0 victory. The result leaves Herediano alone at the top of the Clausura table with 16 points, while Cartagines remains stalled at 13 points.
Venegas’s performance
The former Minnesota United forward was tasked with leading the line in one of the most important matches of the young season.
-
The shift: Venegas was named to manager Amarini Villatoro's starting XI, spearheading the attack for Cartagines.
-
The impact: Despite his team dominating possession throughout the second half after the power delay, Venegas and the Cartagines attacking unit struggled to break down a bunkered Herediano defense. Finding clear-cut chances proved difficult, and the veteran striker was ultimately unable to find the back of the net to spark a comeback for his side.
Up next
Venegas and Cartagines must shake off this frustrating defeat quickly as they shift their focus to continental competition. They will return home to host the Vancouver Whitecaps in the CONCACAF Champions Cup next week.
