Abila makes second-half cameo as Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto gets crushed 4–0
Ramón Ábila and Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday night, falling 4–0 on the road against Atlético Tucumán at the Estadio Monumental José Fierro. The former Minnesota United striker came off the bench in the second half, but the match was already out of reach for a visiting side that struggled defensively from the opening whistle.
Match recap
Atlético Tucumán dominated the contest to secure their first victory of the Apertura campaign. The hosts opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Renzo Tesuri found the back of the net. Just eight minutes later, Leandro Díaz doubled the advantage by converting a penalty kick, sending Tucumán into halftime with a comfortable 2–0 lead.
The second half brought more of the same, with Estudiantes unable to contain the hosts' relentless attack. Díaz struck again to secure his brace and extend the lead to 3–0. Nicolás Laméndola then added the final blow in the 88th minute, sealing the emphatic 4–0 thrashing and leaving the visitors reeling.
Abila’s performance
With his team trailing by multiple goals and searching for an offensive spark, the manager turned to "Wanchope" in the second half.
-
The shift: Ábila was brought on as a substitute to replace fellow forward Mateo Bajamich.
-
The impact: The veteran striker was introduced into a difficult game state where Estudiantes was constantly on the back foot. He struggled to find service in the penalty area against a sturdy Tucumán defense, and his most notable statistical involvement was committing a foul in the 72nd minute as frustration set in for the visitors.
Up next
Ábila and Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto face a quick turnaround and a lot of soul-searching as they return to training. They will need to drastically improve their defensive shape and find a rhythm in the attacking third before their next Argentine Primera División fixture.
