Calvo and Al-Ettifaq unable to slow down high-flying Al-Hilal
Francisco Calvo and Al-Ettifaq faced the ultimate test on Friday, traveling to Riyadh to take on Saudi Pro League leaders Al-Hilal. Despite a hard-fought effort, the former Minnesota United captain and his defensive unit were unable to contain the star-studded "Blue Waves," falling 2–0 at the Kingdom Arena.
Match recap
Al-Hilal stamped their authority on the match immediately, dominating possession and attacking with lethal precision. They broke the deadlock early in the 13th minute when Mohamed Kanno rose to meet a well-placed cross from Malcom following a corner kick, heading it firmly into the back of the net.
The hosts doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark. In the 31st minute, Saudi international Salem Al-Dawsari showcased his trademark composure to finish from close range and make it 2–0. Simone Inzaghi's side expertly managed the game from there, stifling Al-Ettifaq's attempts to counter-attack and securing the clean sheet to extend their lead in the title race. The result leaves Al-Ettifaq in sixth place with 35 points.
Calvo’s performance
The veteran center-back was named in the starting XI and tasked with the monumental challenge of anchoring the backline against one of the most potent attacks in Asia.
- The shift: Calvo started the match and played 72 minutes before being substituted for Jalal Al-Salem as Al-Ettifaq shifted their tactics to chase a late goal.
- The impact: While the defense conceded twice in the first half, Calvo was instrumental in keeping the scoreline respectable against a relentless wave of Al-Hilal pressure. His leadership and positioning helped prevent the league leaders from running up the score in the second half before his tactical withdrawal.
Up next
Calvo and Al-Ettifaq will look to shake off this defeat and solidify their spot in the top half of the table when they return to action in their next Saudi Pro League fixture.
