Kyle Altman

Kyle Altman is one of the most significant figures in Minnesota’s second-division history. A ball-playing center-back known for his intelligence and leadership, he captained the Minnesota Stars to the 2011 NASL Championship. He is widely considered one of the best defenders to ever play for the club during the NASL era.

The vitals

  • Born: Jan. 31, 1986 (Albuquerque, NM)

The player

Altman was a modern defender before the term became popular in the US lower leagues. While physically capable of battling target forwards, his greatest strength was his distribution and ability to read the game. He rarely looked flustered, often solving defensive problems with positioning rather than last-ditch tackles.

The leader

Named captain of the Minnesota Stars in 2011, Altman was the on-field face of the franchise during its most tumultuous yet successful period. He led a team that was owned by the league and operating on a shoestring budget to a championship, earning the respect of teammates and fans alike for his professionalism.

The retirement

Altman’s retirement is part of his legend. He played the first half of the 2013 season knowing it was his farewell tour. He retired mid-season to attend medical school, leaving the sport healthy and in his prime.

Signature moment

The 2011 Soccer Bowl Run While he didn’t score the winning goal, Altman’s performance throughout the 2011 playoffs was a masterclass in defensive leadership. Under siege from higher-seeded teams like Tampa Bay and Fort Lauderdale, Altman organized a backline that bent but refused to break. Lifting the Soccer Bowl trophy in Fort Lauderdale remains the defining image of his career—a moment that validated the struggle of the “NSC Minnesota Stars” era.
