The story so far

Devin Padelford’s journey began in the East Metro, where he starred for St. Croix Academy before joining the Minnesota United Academy in 2019. After signing a homegrown contract in 2022, he spent two seasons honing his craft with MNUFC2 and making occasional first-team appearances, including his MLS debut in June 2023.

His true breakout came in early 2024, when he established himself as a regular starter for the Loons, earning praise for his defensive grit on the left flank. To further his development and secure guaranteed minutes, he was loaned to St. Louis City SC for the final months of the 2025 season. Following a successful spell in St. Louis, Minnesota United exercised his contract option for 2026, bringing the local defender back to Allianz Field to compete for a starting spot in Eric Ramsay’s backline.

What he brings to the pitch

Padelford is defined by a “defense-first” mentality and an impressive physical profile. Unlike many modern fullbacks who prioritize attacking over-laps, Padelford’s primary strength is his 1v1 defending and his aerial dominance. Standing 6’0”, he possesses the size to slide into a central defensive role in a back-three system, offering the tactical flexibility that the coaching staff highly values.

On the pitch, he is known for his professional work rate and “blue-collar” approach to the game. He is rarely caught out of position and has shown remarkable maturity in his decision-making for a young homegrown player. As he enters his fifth professional season, his combination of local pride and growing MLS experience makes him a cornerstone of the club’s defensive depth.
