Alexi Gómez: from the Loons to a Peruvian odyssey

If you followed the Loons during their early MLS days in 2018, you likely remember Edwin Alexi Gómez Gutiérrez. Arriving on loan from Peruvian club Universitario, the versatile left-footed midfielder and defender was brought in to provide a dynamic, physical presence and set-piece danger for Minnesota United.

He ultimately made 18 appearances for the Loons during the 2018 campaign, showcasing his pace and versatility before his loan expired. But where has his footballing journey taken him since his brief stint in the North Star State?

Life after Minnesota: an extensive tour of Peru

Following the conclusion of his MLS loan, Gómez became quite the journeyman. He embarked on a sprawling career that briefly took him to Argentina before seeing him feature for a long list of clubs across his native country.

  • Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata (2019): Gómez briefly took his talents to Argentina’s top flight, heading on loan to Gimnasia early in the year.
  • The Peruvian Top Flight (2019–2021): He quickly returned to Peru, playing for FBC Melgar before sealing a permanent move to domestic powerhouse Alianza Lima in 2020. He followed that up with a solid stint at CD UT Cajamarca in 2021.
  • Bouncing Around the Divisions (2022–2025): Over the next few years, Gómez became a seasoned veteran of the Peruvian leagues. He suited up for Deportivo Llacuabamba, had a lengthy and productive run with Deportivo Garcilaso (logging nearly 50 appearances and scoring four goals), and then spent time with Sport Huancayo, Cienciano, and Alianza Universidad throughout 2024 and 2025.

Where is he now?

At 32 years old, the former Peruvian international is still lacing up his boots! After wrapping up his 2025 campaign with Alianza Universidad—where he logged over 1,000 minutes as a regular starter at left-back—Gómez recently embarked on a new chapter.

In late February 2026, he officially signed with Social Pariacoto, continuing his playing career in the Peruvian lower divisions (Liga 3). With nearly 400 professional appearances across all competitions under his belt, the veteran defender shows no signs of stepping away from the pitch just yet.
