Alan Benítez completes transfer to Club Libertad, returns to roots in Paraguay

Former Minnesota United defender Alan Benítez has officially completed a transfer to Club Libertad, marking a return to the club where he launched his professional career. The 32-year-old Paraguayan international signed a contract through the end of the 2026 season on Feb. 24, joining the Asunción-based side on a free transfer.

Benítez arrives at Libertad following a stint in Brazil with Sport Club Internacional. After falling out of the regular rotation under manager Paulo Pezzolano, Benítez and the Brazilian club mutually agreed to rescind his contract in late February, allowing the veteran right-back to seek consistent playing time elsewhere.

Initially, rumors linked Benítez to a reunion with another former club, Cerro Porteño, but an active transfer ban prevented that move from materializing. That opened the door for Club Libertad to swoop in and secure his signature.

The move represents a homecoming for Benítez. He originally debuted for Libertad in 2013 and spent the first six years of his professional journey at “La Huerta.” During that initial stint, he made nearly 100 appearances and gained crucial Copa Libertadores experience before eventually moving on to Club Olimpia, Cerro Porteño, Minnesota United, and Internacional.

Libertad officially announced the acquisition on social media, welcoming Benítez alongside fellow new additions to the squad. With his domestic and international experience, Benítez is expected to immediately compete for minutes on the right flank as Libertad pushes for another Primera División title.
