Sammy Ndjock’s wild ride from Minnesota to Finland
When you look back at the NASL era of Minnesota United, a few specific players and moments immediately stand out. For many fans, Sammy Ndjock is right at the top of that list.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper brought an impressive resume to the Twin Cities—having just been part of his national team’s 2014 FIFA World Cup roster—and provided some spectacular, athletic saves during his 2015 and 2016 campaigns in Black and Blue. Of course, he is also permanently etched into global soccer internet history for that viral own-goal in a 2016 preseason friendly against Premier League side AFC Bournemouth.
But what happened to Ndjock after he departed Minnesota ahead of the club’s jump to MLS in 2017? His career path since leaving the Loons has been nothing short of a globe-trotting rollercoaster.
Finding a new home in northern Europe
After leaving Minnesota, Ndjock briefly considered retiring from professional soccer entirely. However, he eventually found a new lease on his playing career in Scandinavia. In 2018, he signed with Mikkelin Palloilijat (MP) in Finland. He became a steady, reliable presence in the Finnish football pyramid, eventually earning a stint in the Veikkausliiga (Finland’s top tier) with RoPS in 2020.
A controversial exit
Following his time in the top flight, Ndjock dropped down to the lower divisions to play for Helsinki-based Atlantis FC. He was a regular starter for the club until the summer of 2023, when his tenure came to a dramatic and abrupt halt.
In early July 2023, following a Kakkonen (third tier) match against Grankulla IFK, Atlantis FC officially terminated his contract. The dismissal came after Ndjock conceded three highly uncharacteristic and “suspicious” goals during the defeat, leading the club to swiftly cut ties.
Where is he now?
Despite the dramatic exit from Atlantis FC, the 36-year-old hasn’t stepped away from the game. Today, Ndjock is still in Finland, but he is officially transitioning into the next phase of his soccer life.
He is currently on the books at Leki-futis (FC LeKi) in the Finnish lower divisions. While he is still registered as an active goalkeeper on the roster, his primary role has shifted to the sidelines. Ndjock currently serves as the Goalkeeper Coach for the club, passing on his global experience while working under head coach and fellow Cameroonian Jean Nganbe Nganbe.
