Catching up with defensive legend Ike Opara
If you ask any Minnesota United fan about the turning point for the club’s defense, one name immediately comes to mind. Ike Opara arrived in Minnesota ahead of the 2019 season and instantly transformed the Loons from a struggling backline into one of the most formidable defensive units in Major League Soccer.
During his stellar 2019 campaign, he helped the club reach its first-ever Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, earned MLS Best XI honors, and was named the MLS Defender of the Year—the second time he won the award in his career. Unfortunately, his time on the pitch was cut short. After playing just two matches in 2020, severe concussion symptoms forced him to step away from the game, and Minnesota United officially bought out his contract in August 2021.
From the pitch to the touchline
While his playing days ended prematurely, his soccer career was far from over. He initially transitioned into a scouting role with Nashville SC from 2021 to early 2022.
His coaching journey truly kicked off in January 2022 when he returned to his old stomping grounds, joining Sporting Kansas City II as an assistant coach. Working alongside his former teammate Benny Feilhaber, and later Istvan Urbanyi, he helped guide the next generation of players in the MLS NEXT Pro league.
His coaching trajectory took a sudden leap in August 2025. Following Urbanyi’s departure from the club, he was appointed as the interim head coach for Sporting KC II, taking the helm for the remainder of the 2025 season.
What is next for the veteran defender?
Despite stepping up to lead the squad through a turbulent period, his tenure as head coach was brief. In November 2025, Sporting Kansas City announced that it was mutually decided he would not return to lead SKC II for the 2026 season. The club has since appointed Lee Tschantret to take over the role.
As the 2026 MLS and MLS NEXT Pro seasons get underway, the former Defender of the Year is currently without a club. Given his extensive MLS experience, deep understanding of the game, and recent foray into head coaching, it will be interesting to see where his tactical mind takes him next in the American soccer landscape.
