Mears builds a new legacy in South Florida
Life after the Loons
After his brief stint with Minnesota United, Tyrone Mears headed back to England to finish his playing career with West Bromwich Albion. He officially hung up his boots in the summer of 2019, but the veteran defender didn’t stay away from the pitch for long. Returning to the United States, he successfully transitioned from the locker room to the coaching staff.
Stepping into the front office
Mears initially took on the role of Head Coach for Fort Lauderdale United FC, leading their women’s side in the USL Super League. He found quick success in the technical area, earning Coach of the Month honors on multiple occasions during his tenure.
His impressive work on the sidelines recently led to a massive executive promotion. In September 2025, Fort Lauderdale United announced that Mears was stepping up to become the club’s President of Soccer. In this new front-office role, he is tasked with overseeing all sporting operations for both the women’s and men’s professional programs. Mears is currently busy preparing for the highly anticipated debut of the club’s USL League One men’s side, which is set to kick off its inaugural season in March 2026.
