Oluwaseyi features as Villarreal dismantle Espanyol 4–1 at the Cerámica

Tani Oluwaseyi and Villarreal CF continued their strong home form on Monday afternoon, cruising to a comfortable 4–1 victory over Espanyol at the Estadio de la Cerámica. While the former Minnesota United striker started on the bench, he entered the fray in the second half to help see out a dominant performance that keeps the Yellow Submarine firmly in the hunt for European places.

Match recap

Villarreal took control of the match in the first half, opening the scoring in the 35th minute through Georges Mikautadze, who finished off an assist from Tajon Buchanan. Just six minutes later, an own goal from Espanyol’s J. Salinas doubled the lead, sending the hosts into the break with a 2–0 advantage.

The onslaught continued immediately after halftime. Nicolas Pépé made it 3–0 in the 50th minute, and Alberto Moleiro added a fourth just five minutes later to put the game effectively out of reach before the hour mark. Espanyol managed a late consolation goal through Leandro Cabrera in the 88th minute, but it did little to dampen the mood in Vila-real.

Oluwaseyi’s performance

With the game well in hand, manager Marcelino García Toral turned to his bench to rest key starters, giving Oluwaseyi a run-out for the final stages.

  • The shift: Oluwaseyi entered the match in the 73rd minute, replacing goalscorer Georges Mikautadze.
  • The context: Coming on with a 4–0 lead, the striker’s primary job was to maintain pressure on the Espanyol backline and offer an outlet in transition.
  • Impact: While he didn’t find the back of the net in his 17-minute cameo, his fresh legs helped Villarreal manage the game comfortably until the final whistle.

Up next

Villarreal will look to carry this momentum into their next fixture as the La Liga season heats up. They travel to face Elche on Friday, Feb. 13. Oluwaseyi will be hoping his steady contributions off the bench put him in contention for more minutes as the schedule tightens.
