Speel denied clean sheet as Shelbourne draws 1–1 with Waterford

Wessel Speel and Shelbourne FC had to settle for a point on opening night, drawing 1–1 with Waterford FC at the Waterford Regional Sports Centre on Friday. The Minnesota United loanee made several key interventions but was ultimately undone by a moment of misfortune in the second half as the “Blues” fought back to earn a share of the spoils.

Match recap

Shelbourne looked set to take all three points after controlling much of the first half and taking the lead. However, the momentum shifted in the second half as Waterford manager Jon Daly’s triple substitution sparked the hosts into life.

The equalizer came in agonizing fashion for Speel. A flick from Waterford’s Lonergan was directed straight at the goalkeeper, but Speel could only parry the ball onto the underside of the crossbar before it crossed the line. Despite a late push from both sides, the match ended level, mirroring the result between these two clubs on the opening night of the 2024 season.

Speel’s performance

Wessel Speel started in goal and played the full 90 minutes for the Reds.

  • The save attempt: On the equalizer, Speel reacted quickly to the initial flick but was unlucky to see his save rebound off the woodwork and in.
  • Command of the area: Outside of the goal, the 6’7″ keeper was dominant in the air, claiming crosses to relieve pressure as Waterford pushed for a winner in front of a raucous crowd of over 3,000.
  • Distribution: Speel looked comfortable with the ball at his feet, helping Shelbourne build from the back during their dominant spells in the first hour.
