Calvo marshals defense as Al-Ettifaq shuts out Damac 2–0

Al-Ettifaq secured their second consecutive clean sheet on Friday, defeating Damac FC 2–0 at the Prince Mohammed Bin Fahd Stadium. Former Minnesota United defender Francisco Calvo put in a commanding shift in central defense, helping his side stifle the visitors and climb further up the Saudi Pro League table.

Match recap

Steven Gerrard’s side controlled the tempo from the opening whistle. The breakthrough came early in the 19th minute, when captain Georginio Wijnaldum finished a well-worked team move to give the hosts a 1–0 lead.

Damac attempted to rally in the second half, but Al-Ettifaq’s defense gave them little room to operate. The result was sealed in the 75th minute when midfielder Mukhtar Ali doubled the advantage, ensuring a comfortable final 15 minutes for the home crowd.

Calvo’s performance

Francisco Calvo was a rock at the back for Al-Ettifaq, playing the full 90 minutes alongside Jack Hendry.

  • The shift: Calvo was rarely troubled but remained alert to snuff out Damac’s few counter-attacking opportunities. His distribution from the back was key in the buildup to the opening goal.
  • Defensive solidity: With Al-Ettifaq dominating possession, Calvo’s primary role was organization. He successfully won his aerial duels and ensured the defensive line remained high, keeping Damac pinned in their own half.
  • Clean sheet: This marks back-to-back shutouts for Calvo and the defense, a significant improvement after a shaky start to the year. Unlike his partner Hendry, who picked up a yellow card, Calvo played a disciplined game without entering the referee’s book.
