Where are they now? Mamadou Dieng

Today marks Mamadou Dieng‘s 22nd birthday! The Senegalese striker is preparing for his first full season in Major League Soccer, looking to break out after his mid-season arrival last year.

The path to Minnesota

Dieng’s rise in American soccer was meteoric. Arriving at Hartford Athletic in the USL Championship in 2024 as a relatively unknown prospect from the Sahel Academy in Senegal, he quickly became a nightmare for defenders.

He wasn’t just good; he was historic. In less than two seasons with Hartford, he scored 23 goals in 57 appearances, becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. His blend of size, speed, and clinical finishing made him one of the most coveted young prospects in the lower divisions.

Minnesota United won the race for his signature, paying a significant transfer fee to bring him to Saint Paul in August 2025.

Where is he now?

He is fighting for minutes at Allianz Field. As of his 22nd birthday, Dieng is entering the 2026 campaign looking to translate his USL dominance to the top flight.

  • The adjustment: After arriving late in the 2025 season, Dieng made 4 appearances for the Loons, primarily as a late-game substitute. The club used the final months of the season to let him acclimate to the speed of MLS and the tactical demands of the system.
  • The contract: The front office sees him as a long-term investment. He is currently under contract through the 2026 season, with club options for 2027 and 2028, signaling their belief that his best years are ahead of him.
  • The 2026 outlook: With a full preseason under his belt, the 6’2″ striker is expected to compete for the backup striker role, providing a physical, direct option off the bench to change games.

So, if you want to wish the birthday boy well, you can do it in person at the home opener later this month.
