Schüller joins Danish side Vendsyssel FF following partner’s move
Rasmus Schüller, the tenacious Finnish midfielder who was part of Minnesota United’s inaugural MLS squad, has found a new home in Denmark, according to Bold.dk. The 34-year-old has signed a contract with Vendsyssel FF in the Danish 1st Division (NordicBet Liga) running through the summer of 2027.
The move marks a new chapter for Schüller, who arrives on a free transfer after a successful five-year stint with Swedish giants Djurgårdens IF, where he won the Allsvenskan title in 2019 and became a key figure in their midfield.
A package deal
While Schüller brings significant experience to Vendsyssel, the transfer was heavily influenced by matters off the pitch. The move allows him to reunite with his partner, Swedish defender Sara Olai, who recently signed with Fortuna Hjørring, one of Denmark’s most prestigious women’s clubs.
The two clubs are based in the same city, Hjørring, making the dual transfer a perfect logistical solution for the footballing couple.
“The timing is perfect,” Vendsyssel FF stated in a release, noting that they see Schüller taking on a “mentor role” for the squad’s younger players while anchoring the midfield with his trademark work rate. He has been assigned the number 8 shirt.
The Minnesota connection
Loons fans remember Schüller as one of the “Originals.” He signed with Minnesota United ahead of the 2017 inaugural MLS season. While his first year was difficult—marked by the team’s defensive struggles and his own adaptation period—he returned from a loan spell at HJK Helsinki in 2018 to become a vital piece of Adrian Heath’s midfield.
Schüller made 53 appearances for the Loons, helping stabilize the team during the transition from “expansion strugglers” to playoff contenders before departing after the 2019 season.
Up next
Schüller could make his debut for Vendsyssel FF as early as this weekend as the club looks to climb the NordicBet Liga table. He joins a growing list of former Loons active in Scandinavia, including Teemu Pukki (HJK) and Jukka Raitala (recently retired at Gnistan).
