Toye makes debut as Ingolstadt stuns Hansa Rostock in 3–0 rout
FC Ingolstadt delivered a masterclass on the road Saturday morning, dismantling promotion-chasing Hansa Rostock 3–0 at a stunned Ostseestadion. While the headlines will rightly focus on the dominant team performance, the match also marked a significant milestone for former Minnesota United striker Mason Toye, who made his official debut for the German club in the closing stages.
Match recap
Ingolstadt arrived in Rostock as underdogs but played with the confidence of league leaders. They silenced the home crowd early when Marcel Costly opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Before Rostock could regroup, Max Besuschkow doubled the advantage in the 35th minute, sending the visitors into the break with a commanding 2–0 lead.
Any hopes of a Hansa Rostock comeback were extinguished in the 68th minute when Costly grabbed his second of the match, effectively securing the three points. The visitors managed the game professionally from there, keeping a clean sheet to cap off a perfect away day.
Toye’s performance
With the result safely in hand, manager Michael Köllner handed Mason Toye his long-awaited debut in the 81st minute, replacing forward Julian Kügel.
- The debut: Wearing the number 13 shirt, Toye stepped onto the pitch for his first competitive minutes in European football. It was a low-pressure environment for a debut, allowing him to get a feel for the pace of the 3. Liga without the burden of chasing a game.
- The cameo: In his nine minutes of action (plus stoppage time), Toye looked to stretch the tired Rostock defense. While he didn’t have any clear-cut scoring chances, his physical presence helped Ingolstadt see out the game and retain possession high up the pitch.
- Milestone: This appearance marks the official start of Toye’s European chapter after leaving MLS earlier this winter.
