Quintero pulls strings but 10-man Millonarios falls in Pasto, 2-1

Millonarios suffered a frustrating 2–1 defeat on Wednesday night as they were unable to overcome a first-half red card against a clinical Deportivo Pasto side at the Estadio Departamental Libertad. Despite a resilient performance in the thin air of Pasto, the “Embajadores” leave empty-handed, while the hosts continue their perfect start to the Apertura campaign.

Match recap

The match started at a frantic pace, and the hosts wasted no time capitalizing on the home-field advantage. In the 4th minute, Yéiler Góez found space at the edge of the area to fire Pasto into an early 1–0 lead. Millonarios refused to buckle, however, and eventually clawed their way back into the game. In the 30th minute, Rodrigo Contreras clinicaly finished a flowing team move to level the score at 1–1.

The complexion of the match changed entirely just before halftime when Mateo García was shown a straight red card. Forced to play the entire second half with ten men, Millonarios shifted into a defensive block, soaking up pressure and looking to hit on the counter. The resistance held until the 78th minute, when Andrey Estupiñán finally breached the defense to secure the winner for Pasto.

Quintero’s performance

The “Scientist of the Goal,” Darwin Quintero, was the creative heartbeat for Millonarios during his time on the pitch, though his night was cut short by the team’s tactical needs following the red card.

  • Creative spark: Operating in the #10 role, Quintero was instrumental in the buildup to the equalizing goal. His vision and ability to find pockets of space between the Pasto lines allowed Millonarios to dictate the tempo during a dominant 15-minute stretch in the first half.
  • Tactical sacrifice: Following the dismissal of Mateo García, Quintero was substituted at halftime as Millonarios transitioned into a 4-4-1 defensive block. With the team needing an extra body in the defensive midfield to cope with the altitude and the numerical disadvantage, the veteran playmaker was the one sacrificed for a more defensive-minded replacement.
  • Early impact: Despite playing only 45 minutes, Quintero led the team in progressive passes and was the primary outlet whenever the visitors looked to break Pasto’s high press.
