Ábila joins Estudiantes de Río Cuarto after Huracán departure

Veteran striker and former Minnesota United forward Ramón “Wanchope” Ábila has officially found a new home, signing with Estudiantes de Río Cuarto in the Argentine Primera Nacional. The move, confirmed by the club on Tuesday, marks a significant reinforcement for the “León del Imperio” as they push for promotion to the top flight.

Ábila arrives at the Córdoba-based club following a brief second stint with Huracán. Despite his deep history with the Globo, the 36-year-old found playing time difficult to come by in recent months, leading to a mutual agreement to seek a fresh start in the second division.

Massive signing for the Primera Nacional

The arrival of Ábila is being hailed as one of the most high-profile transfers in the history of Estudiantes RC. Throughout his career, “Wanchope” has been a prolific, if nomadic, goalscorer. From his legendary runs at Boca Juniors and Huracán to his time in Brazil with Cruzeiro, Ábila has consistently proven to be a clinical finisher when healthy.

For Estudiantes de Río Cuarto, the signing is a clear statement of intent. The club has flirted with promotion to the Primera División in recent seasons, and adding a striker with Ábila’s pedigree—nearly 160 career goals across all competitions—provides a level of experience and goal-scoring threat rarely seen in the second tier.

The Loons connection

Minnesota United fans will remember Ábila for his short but eventful stint in Saint Paul during the 2021 season. Joining on loan from Boca Juniors, Wanchope became an immediate fan favorite for his efficiency, scoring twice in just 10 appearances (spanning only 258 minutes). Despite his high goal-per-minute ratio, his time in MLS was cut short due to tactical fit and injury concerns, leading to a mid-season move to D.C. United.

Looking ahead

Ábila is expected to begin training with his new teammates immediately. While he is entering the twilight of his career, his physical presence and box movement are expected to be a nightmare for Primera Nacional defenders.

For a player who has won league titles and reached the heights of the Copa Libertadores, this move to Río Cuarto represents a return to his roots in the Córdoba province, where he first began his professional journey with Instituto.
