Quintero starts as Millonarios falls 2-1 to Junior in Apertura home opener

Millonarios suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat to Junior FC on Sunday evening at the Estadio El Campín. In a high-stakes Apertura clash, the “Embajadores” were unable to capitalize on their home advantage, as a clinical Junior side struck twice in the first half to secure the victory. Despite a resilient effort and an equalizer from Rodrigo Contreras, the hosts left Bogotá empty-handed, while Junior moves up the table with a crucial road win.

Match recap

The match began with high intensity, as both sides sought to establish control in the thin air of Bogotá. Junior found the breakthrough in the 27th minute when veteran Teófilo Gutiérrez clinicaly finished a well-worked attacking move. Millonarios responded with pressure of their own and were rewarded in the 38th minute when Rodrigo Contreras leveled the score, sending the home supporters into a frenzy.

However, the momentum shifted back to the visitors just before the break. In the 45th minute, Jermein Peña capitalized on a set-piece opportunity to restore Junior’s lead. The second half was a physical affair, characterized by a flurry of yellow cards for both sides as Millonarios pushed desperately for a second equalizer. Despite several late chances and tactical shifts from manager Hernán Torres, the Junior defense held firm to preserve the 2-1 result.

Quintero’s performance

The former Minnesota United star, Darwin Quintero, occupied his familiar creative role in the Millonarios midfield, acting as the primary engine for the team’s offensive transitions.

  • Vision and playmaking: Wearing the #7, Quintero was the most active creative presence for the “Embajadores.” He consistently looked to thread incisive passes to Rodrigo Contreras and was involved in the buildup for the equalizing goal.
  • Goal threat: Quintero registered two shots during the match, including a dangerous effort in the second half that forced a sharp save from Junior’s Mauro Silveira.
  • Work rate: Despite his age, the “Scientist of the Goal” showed impressive stamina, playing nearly the full match (88 minutes) before being substituted late as Millonarios shifted to an all-out attack.
