Oluwaseyi subbed on late as Villarreal falls to Real Madrid, 2-0

Villarreal CF saw their impressive home form stutter on Saturday evening as they fell 0-2 to a clinical Real Madrid side led by Kylian Mbappé. Despite a spirited defensive effort at the Estadio de la Cerámica, the “Yellow Submarine” was unable to bridge the gap against the league leaders, who used two second-half strikes to secure all three points and move temporarily to the top of the La Liga table.

Match recap

The first half was a masterclass in tactical discipline from Villarreal, as they successfully neutralized Real Madrid’s high-powered attack. Goalkeeper Luiz Júnior was called into action early to deny Arda Güler, while the defensive partnership of Renato Veiga and Rafa Marín—who replaced the injured Juan Foyth early on—kept Vinícius Júnior largely under wraps. Villarreal had their own chances, with Gerard Moreno and Georges Mikautadze threatening, but the teams headed into the locker rooms deadlocked at 0-0.

The game changed almost immediately after the restart. In the 47th minute, Mbappé pounced on a loose ball in the six-yard box to poke home the opener. Villarreal manager Marcelino turned to his bench in the 70th minute, introducing Tani Oluwaseyi and Nicolas Pépé to provide a physical spark. While Oluwaseyi was active, winning a late free kick and engaging in physical duels with Antonio Rüdiger, Real Madrid remained firm. A late penalty, converted by Mbappé in stoppage time after he was fouled by Alfonso Pedraza, sealed the victory for the visitors.

Oluwaseyi’s performance

The former Minnesota United standout was introduced in the 70th minute for club legend Gerard Moreno, tasked with finding a late equalizer against one of the best defenses in Europe.

  • Physical presence: Oluwaseyi immediately made his presence felt, using his strength to hold up play against Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen. His arrival allowed Villarreal to play more directly in the final twenty minutes.
  • Winning fouls: In the 87th minute, Oluwaseyi won a crucial free kick in the attacking half after being fouled by Álvaro Carreras, providing a set-piece opportunity that the hosts ultimately couldn’t convert.
  • Work rate: Despite the lack of clean looks at goal, Oluwaseyi’s pressing forced Real Madrid into several hurried clearances, keeping the pressure on the visitors until the final minutes.
