Minnesota United acquires winger Mauricio González from Deportes Tolima
Minnesota United announced today that the club has acquired 21-year-old winger Mauricio González from the Colombian first-division side Deportes Tolima.
The player has signed a contract that runs through the 2029-30 MLS season, with an additional club option for the 2030-31 campaign.
Roster integration and expectations
Chief soccer officer and sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad spoke positively about the new addition, describing González as a young and dynamic player with significant upside. He highlighted the winger’s technical abilities, attacking instincts, and the confidence to challenge defenders in one-on-one situations. The organization intends to focus on a structured integration process to allow González to continue his development while competing at a high level in Major League Soccer.
González expressed his excitement regarding the move, stating that he is eager to join the team and perform to the best of his ability. He mentioned that he looks forward to meeting the fans at Allianz Field and working toward winning championships with the club.
Career history and statistics
González arrives in Minnesota after spending half a season on loan with Deportes Tolima from Inter Palmira. During his recent stint in the Colombian top flight, he recorded five goals and three assists in 27 appearances. His professional journey began in the youth system of Cortuluá, now known as Inter Palmira, where he rose through the ranks before making his senior debut in October 2022. To date, he has accumulated 11 goals and three assists across 85 professional club appearances.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season
The addition of González follows several other recent roster reinforcements, including midfielder Peter Stroud, winger Tomás Chancalay, and goalkeeper Drake Callender. González will occupy an international roster spot for the upcoming season, pending the receipt of his international transfer certificate and P-1 visa.
The team is currently in a period of transition following the departure of former manager Eric Ramsay to West Bromwich Albion and the subsequent appointment of Cameron Knowles as head coach. Minnesota is scheduled to begin its 2026 competitive schedule on February 21 with a road match against Austin FC at Q2 Stadium.
