Charlotte FC acquires goalkeeper Tyler Miller from Bolton Wanderers

Charlotte FC today announced the signing of goalkeeper Tyler Miller from EFL League One side Bolton Wanderers for an undisclosed transfer fee. The 32-year-old veteran has signed a contract with The Crown through the 2027-28 Major League Soccer season, with a club option for the 2028-29 campaign.

Experience and pedigree

Miller arrives in Charlotte with extensive experience in Major League Soccer, having made over 130 regular-season appearances and recorded 38 clean sheets across stints with the Seattle Sounders, Los Angeles FC, Minnesota United, and D.C. United. He was a key figure in LAFC’s 2019 Supporters’ Shield-winning campaign and earned an MLS All-Star nod in 2023 during his time in the Nation’s Capital.

“Tyler comes to Charlotte with a strong MLS pedigree and good experience with the USMNT and in Europe,” said Charlotte FC General Manager Zoran Krneta. “He will provide valuable experience and competition for the top spot within our goalkeeping group this season.”

Returning to the United States

The move marks a return to the United States for Miller after a brief spell in England. He spent the first half of 2025 with Notts County before joining Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2025. During his time at Bolton, he made nine appearances and kept four clean sheets across all competitions.

According to reports from The Bolton News, Miller expressed a desire to return to Major League Soccer for family reasons. Bolton manager Steven Schumacher noted that the opportunity to move back to the U.S. was something the player and his family were eager to take, and the club chose not to stand in his way.

Role in the squad

Miller is expected to provide high-level depth and competition for current number-one goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina. His arrival follows a busy offseason for the Charlotte goalkeeping department, which saw last year’s backup, Drake Callender, traded to Minnesota United in December.

With the 2026 MLS season set to begin on February 21, Miller will join Head Coach Dean Smith’s squad immediately as they finalize their preparations for the opening match against St. Louis CITY SC.
