Where are they now?: Adrien Hunou

Today marks the 32nd birthday of Adrien Hunou. To many Loons fans, Hunou remains one of the most intriguing “what if” stories in the club’s history. Arriving in 2021 as a high-profile Designated Player from Rennes, the Frenchman brought a clinical reputation and a knack for finding space in the box. While his time in Minnesota was relatively short, he remains a frequent topic of conversation for those who follow the alumni network.

A return to familiar ground

After a stint with Angers SCO following his departure from Minnesota in 2022, Hunou has come full circle. In July 2025, he returned to Clermont Foot 63, the club where he previously enjoyed a successful loan spell early in his career. Currently competing in Ligue 2, Hunou has taken on a veteran leadership role for a side looking to climb back into the French top flight.

  • Leading the line: Now 32, Hunou has adapted his game, often playing as a second striker or an attacking midfielder. His experience is vital for a younger Clermont squad.
  • Current campaign: In the first half of the 2025–2026 season, Hunou has been a fixture in the rotation, contributing crucial goals including a match-winner against Rodez in September.
  • Contracted through 2027: Hunou signed a two-year deal upon his return, signaling his intent to finish his prime years helping Clermont stabilize their position in French football.

The Minnesota legacy

Adrien Hunou’s tenure with Minnesota United (2021–2022) was a period of high expectations. He arrived with a “fox in the box” reputation from Ligue 1, and while he delivered several memorable moments—including a brace in his first home start—he often found himself battling for minutes in a crowded attacking rotation.

  • By the numbers: Hunou finished his MLS career with seven goals in 35 appearances. His work rate was never in question, often covering more distance than any other attacker on the pitch.
  • U.S. Open Cup heroics: He was particularly effective in cup play, helping the Loons navigate difficult early rounds with his veteran positioning.
  • Tactical shift: His departure to Angers in late 2022 allowed the club to move in a different tactical direction, but his professionalism during the transition was widely praised by the coaching staff.

Looking ahead: 32 and beyond

As he enters his 32nd year, Hunou shows no signs of slowing down. For Clermont Foot, having a player of his pedigree in Ligue 2 is a luxury, and he remains the go-to option when the team needs a calm head in the final third.

Happy Birthday, Adrien! Once a Loon, always a Loon.
