Today marks the 45th birthday of Daniel Mendes, a player whose flair and clinical finishing made him a cornerstone of the Minnesota United attack during the club’s final years in the NASL. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Mendes arrived in the Twin Cities with a wealth of experience from the Swedish Allsvenskan, and he quickly proved to be the “missing piece” for a side that dominated the 2014 spring season. As he celebrates his birthday today, we look at the legacy he left behind and where his journey has taken him since hanging up his boots.
From the Allsvenskan to the National Sports Center
Daniel Mendes joined the Loons in early 2014 on loan from Kalmar FF, a move that was made permanent later that year. He immediately formed a prolific partnership with Christian Ramirez, bringing a veteran presence and a tireless work rate to the front line.
- Championship pedigree: Mendes was instrumental in the club’s 2014 Spring Championship win, providing the technical quality needed to unlock the toughest defenses in the league.
- Clutch performances: Fans will never forget his impact in high-stakes matches, including his goal-scoring heroics against rivals like Indy Eleven and New York Cosmos.
- Stat sheet: Across his three seasons in Minnesota, Mendes recorded 14 goals and 4 assists, making him one of the most efficient strikers in the club’s history before the move to MLS.
Life after the Loons: The Florida chapter
When the club transitioned to Major League Soccer in 2017, Mendes stayed stateside but moved south to find a new challenge in the sun. He transitioned to the indoor game, joining the Florida Tropics SC in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL).
- Indoor success: Mendes quickly adapted to the fast-paced indoor environment, becoming a fan favorite in Lakeland for his ability to score from tight angles.
- Retirement: After a final stint with The Villages SC in the Premier Development League, Mendes officially retired from professional football on Dec. 1, 2018.
- Staying in the game: Today, Mendes resides in Florida and remains active in the soccer community. He has focused on youth development, utilizing his “Brazilian flair” to mentor young strikers and help them refine their technical skills near his home in central Florida.
