Reynoso’s debut ends in frustration as Deportivo Cali falls to Jaguares

Emanuel Reynoso made his long-awaited debut for Deportivo Cali on Sunday, but the former Minnesota United playmaker could not prevent his new side from a 1-0 opening-day defeat against Jaguares de Córdoba. In a tightly contested match at the Estadio Jaraguay in Montería, the Azucareros struggled to convert their possession into clear-cut chances, leaving the Argentine creative engine searching for a spark in his first outing in Colombian football.

Match recap

The match served as the Apertura season opener for both sides, and the intensity was evident from the opening whistle. Deportivo Cali, under the guidance of Alberto Gamero, looked to control the ball early, with the home side Jaguares content to sit deep and strike on the counter. The first half was characterized by defensive discipline and a lack of fluidity in the final third, with the woodwork saving Cali on more than one occasion.

The breakthrough for Jaguares arrived in the 70th minute. Shortly after coming off the bench, José “Jopito” Álvarez unleashed a powerful long-range strike that found the top corner, leaving the Cali defense with no answer. Despite a frantic final twenty minutes where Cali pushed their lines forward, Jaguares held firm to claim the three points in front of their home supporters.

Reynoso’s performance

Emanuel Reynoso was the focal point of the Cali attack, operating in his familiar number ten role. Throughout the match, Reynoso showed glimpses of the vision and technical ability that made him a fan favorite in Saint Paul, frequently dropping deep to collect the ball and looking for the “killer pass” to break the Jaguares lines.

However, it was a physically demanding introduction to the Liga BetPlay for Reynoso. He was the target of several robust challenges as the Jaguares midfield sought to limit his time on the ball. His competitive edge was on display as well, resulting in a yellow card in the 43rd minute for a late challenge as he tracked back defensively. While he maintained a high pass completion rate, the final connection with his forwards remained elusive in the heavy afternoon heat of Montería.
