Mariehamn stuns Pukki’s HJK, 1-0, in Liigacup opener

HJK Helsinki suffered a frustrating start to their 2026 Liigacup campaign on Friday morning, falling 1–0 to IFK Mariehamn at the Talin Jalkapallohalli. Despite dominating possession and forcing several saves from the visiting keeper, the reigning Finnish giants were unable to find a breakthrough, marking a rare home defeat to start the new year.

Match recap

The match began with HJK dictating the tempo, utilizing their wingers to stretch the Mariehamn defense. However, the visitors remained compact, frustrating the Helsinki attack and limiting clear-cut opportunities in the final third. The first half ended in a stalemate, with HJK’s Lucas Lingman coming closest with a long-range effort that rattled the crossbar.

The decisive moment arrived early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Mariehamn’s Jiri Nissinen clinicaly finished a rapid counter-attack, beating the HJK keeper at the near post to give the visitors a surprise 1–0 lead. HJK responded by throwing numbers forward, but a combination of resilient defending and missed connections in the box saw the clock run out on the home side.

Pukki’s performance

The match featured the legendary Teemu Pukki, who is entering his first full season back in Finland following his storied career in England and Minnesota.

  • The focal point: Starting as the lone striker, Pukki was the primary target for HJK’s crosses and vertical through-balls throughout his time on the pitch.
  • Movement and threat: Pukki nearly found the equalizer in the 62nd minute, but his clinical half-volley was brilliantly saved by the Mariehamn keeper.
  • Link-up play: Despite the lack of service in the box, he was instrumental in dropping deep to link the midfield and attack, creating two key chances for David Ezeh.
  • Status: Played 75 minutes before being substituted for Santeri Hostikka as HJK looked to inject more pace into the final pursuit of a goal.
