Former Loon Fanendo Adi promoted to MNUFC2 head coach

MNUFC2 announced on Thursday that Fanendo Adi has been promoted to the role of head coach, effective immediately.

Adi, who finished his playing career with Minnesota United in 2021, has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach for the second team. He replaces Jeremy Hall, who recently accepted a position with the United States youth national team.

A rising coaching talent

The promotion marks a significant step in the coaching career of the 35-year-old Nigerian. Adi began his coaching journey in 2023 as the head coach of the MNUFC Academy U19 side. He quickly transitioned to the professional level, serving as an assistant coach for MNUFC2 throughout 2024 and 2025. During his tenure as an assistant, he helped guide the team to its first-ever MLS NEXT Pro playoffs appearance and a deep run to the Western Conference final in 2025.

Amos Magee, the MNUFC head of development and player pathway, noted that Adi earned the opportunity through his willingness to learn and the growth he demonstrated while working with staff at all levels of the club. Magee expressed excitement for the impact Adi will have on the club’s development spaces as he builds his coaching resume.

Continuing the development pathway

Adi is eager to apply his extensive playing experience to the growth of young prospects within the Minnesota United system. He emphasized the importance of the player pathway and MLS NEXT Pro in helping young men transition into professional footballers. He stated that he is grateful for the club’s belief in his expertise and is looking forward to the start of the 2026 season.

In addition to his work with the second team, Adi was a member of the interim coaching staff for the Minnesota United first team at the beginning of the 2024 campaign. He assisted during a successful 2-0-1 start to the MLS regular season before returning to his role with the Twos.

A decorated playing resume

Before moving into coaching, Adi enjoyed a storied playing career as one of the most productive forwards in Major League Soccer history. He is a two-time MLS Cup champion, winning the title with the Portland Timbers in 2015 and the Columbus Crew in 2020. He remains a legendary figure in Portland, where he scored 54 goals across five seasons and was recently voted into the club’s all-time XI.

Adi’s career also included several years in Europe, where he competed in the UEFA Champions League while playing for Slovakian side AS Trenčín. He currently holds both a UEFA B and a USSF national B coaching license.

MNUFC2 will enter its fifth season in MLS NEXT Pro this year. The full schedule for the upcoming campaign is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
