Calvo leads backline to clean sheet in Al-Ettifaq victory over Al Akhdoud

The first Friday of 2026 brought a dominant defensive display from former Loon Francisco Calvo as Al-Ettifaq secured a 2–0 victory over Al Akhdoud at the Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium. The win keeps Steven Gerrard’s side in the hunt for the top four and highlights the defensive stability Calvo has brought to the team since his arrival in Dammam.

Match recap

Al-Ettifaq controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, though they were forced to be patient against a disciplined Al Akhdoud defensive block. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 54th minute when Georginio Wijnaldum connected with a precise cross from Madallah Al Olayan to make it 1–0.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 76th minute when Wijnaldum converted a penalty, effectively ending the contest. Throughout the match, the visitors struggled to find any offensive rhythm, largely due to an organized Al-Ettifaq defense that allowed only two shots on target the entire afternoon.

Calvo’s performance

Starting in his usual left-center back role, Calvo was the vocal leader of a defensive unit that looked impenetrable for most of the afternoon.

  • Clean sheet anchor: This shutout marks another successful defensive outing for Calvo, who has become the cornerstone of Gerrard’s preferred defensive system.
  • Aerial dominance: Calvo was a force in the air, winning the majority of his contested duels and neutralizing Al Akhdoud’s direct play toward their target men.
  • Distribution: He remained a key part of the build-up, finishing the match with high pass accuracy and frequently finding outlets in the midfield to relieve pressure.
  • Tactical exit: Calvo was subbed out in the 85th minute for Faris Al Ghamdi as Al-Ettifaq shifted to a more conservative shape to see out the final minutes of the match.
