Where are they now?: Tomás Chancalay

Today is Jan. 1, 2026, and while the rest of the world is busy with resolutions, we are celebrating a birthday and a new beginning at Allianz Field. Tomás Chancalay turns 27 today, and for the first time in his career, he celebrates his big day as a member of Minnesota United.

Because he joined the club just six days ago in a Boxing Day trade, his story is still being written in the North. However, his journey to get to this point spans three continents and a series of high-stakes environments that have prepared him to lead the Loons’ attack.

From Argentina to the world

Born on New Year’s Day in 1999 in Viale, Argentina, Chancalay rises through the ranks of CA Colón before making a high-profile move to Racing Club. His talent is evident early on, earning him a place in Argentina’s squad for the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup. He eventually makes his way to Major League Soccer by way of the United Arab Emirates, where he proves his scoring ability with Al-Wasl.

The road back from injury

Loons fans know him best from his time with the New England Revolution. He arrives in the United States in 2023 and immediately catches fire, scoring six goals in his first 11 matches. His career faces a major hurdle in May 2024 when a torn ACL ends his season prematurely. However, 2025 serves as his comeback year. He features 26 times for the Revolution this past season, proving that his explosive power and signature long-range shooting remain intact.

The current chapter in Saint Paul

As of today, Chancalay is officially the new focal point of the Minnesota attack. Following the departure of Robin Lod to Chicago, the responsibility of creative leadership falls largely on the shoulders of today’s birthday boy. He is no longer an opponent or a recovery story; he is the present and future of the Loons’ offensive rotation.
