Miller makes EFL League One debut for Bolton in 1-1 draw vs. Doncaster

Bolton Wanderers fought back from a goal down to earn a 1–1 draw against Doncaster Rovers on New Year’s Day. In a match where the visitors often looked sluggish, a late equalizer spared their blushes and ensured they didn’t start 2026 with a defeat. For Minnesota United fans, the headline was the return of Tyler Miller to the starting lineup for his first-ever EFL League One start.

Match recap

The first half was a largely disjointed affair, with Bolton struggling to find any rhythm against a high-energy Doncaster side. Despite the lack of flow, the home side created the better chances, forcing several interventions from the Bolton backline. The deadlock was finally broken in the 55th minute when Glenn Middleton found the back of the net to give Doncaster a deserved lead. Bolton manager Ian Evatt turned to his bench to spark a comeback, and the pressure eventually told in the 78th minute. Kyle Dempsey capitalized on a loose ball in the box to poke home the equalizer, securing a point that Bolton perhaps didn’t deserve based on the balance of play.

Miller’s performance

Miller was arguably Bolton’s standout performer on a day when many of his teammates struggled to reach their usual levels.

  • League debut: After serving as the backup for much of the season, Miller was handed his first league start in place of Teddy Sharman-Lowe. He looked sharp from the opening whistle and handled the pressure of the holiday fixture with veteran composure.
  • Stunning save: Miller’s highlight of the match came in the first half when he produced a world-class reflex save to deny Owen Bailey’s flicked header from a free-kick. The stop kept the match scoreless at a time when Bolton was under significant pressure.
  • Command of the area: He was proactive throughout the afternoon, coming off his line effectively to claim several dangerous crosses and organizing a defensive unit that was frequently tested by Doncaster’s tempo.
  • Distribution: While Bolton struggled to build from the back as a team, Miller’s distribution was reliable, often looking to find wide outlets quickly to relieve pressure.

Stats

  • Minutes played: 90
  • Saves: 5
  • Goals conceded: 1
  • Punches: 2
  • High claims: 3

While Bolton will be disappointed not to have taken all three points, Miller’s performance provides a major selection headache for the coaching staff heading into the January window.
