Calvo’s Al-Ettifaq halts Al-Nassr’s perfect start in 2–2 draw

It was a night of high drama at the Prince Mohamed bin Fahd Stadium as Al-Ettifaq fought back to secure a 2–2 draw against league leaders Al-Nassr. In a match that lived up to its marquee billing, Georginio Wijnaldum’s brace cancelled out goals from João Félix and Cristiano Ronaldo, ending Al-Nassr’s flawless 10-game winning streak in the Saudi Pro League.

Match recap

Al-Ettifaq took a surprising lead in the 16th minute when Wijnaldum curled a precise effort into the top corner. Despite Al-Nassr dominating possession for much of the first half, the home side went into the interval with their 1–0 lead intact.

The second half began with a flurry of action. Just moments after the restart, João Félix leveled the score for the visitors. In the 67th minute, a Félix strike deflected off the back of Cristiano Ronaldo and into the net, briefly giving Al-Nassr a 2–1 lead. However, the Commandos refused to buckle. In the 80th minute, Wijnaldum found space in the box once more to fire home his second of the night, securing a massive point for Steven Gerrard’s side and delighting the home crowd.

Francisco Calvo’s performance

Coming off his Christmas Day goal, Francisco Calvo was tasked with the toughest assignment in the league: neutralizing the combined threat of Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix.

  • Defensive anchor: Calvo played the full 90 minutes and was instrumental in Al-Ettifaq’s defensive stand. He led the team in successful tackles and was a constant presence in the air, clearing several dangerous crosses aimed at Ronaldo.
  • Tactical discipline: Facing an Al-Nassr side that had scored 33 goals in their first 10 matches, Calvo’s positioning was vital. He effectively organized the backline, especially during a frantic final ten minutes when Al-Nassr pushed numbers forward in search of a winner.
  • Physical presence: Calvo didn’t shy away from the physical side of the game, winning four of his five contested ground duels and providing the ruggedness needed to disrupt the visitors’ rhythm.
  • Near-miss in attack: Calvo almost turned provider in the first half, nearly finding Moussa Dembélé with a searching diagonal ball that was only cleared by a desperate defensive header.
