Thank you, Dayne: Loons part ways with MLS Goalkeeper of the Year
The era of Dayne St. Clair in Minnesota has officially come to an end. Following weeks of negotiations after the conclusion of the 2025 season, Minnesota United FC and St. Clair both announced on social media today that the club will be parting ways with the reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year as he enters free agency.
While it is difficult to see a player of Dayne’s caliber move on—especially after the historic season he just completed—we look back on his seven-year journey in the Twin Cities with immense gratitude.
The Pinnacle: 2025 Goalkeeper of the Year
Dayne is leaving at the absolute top of his game. His 2025 campaign was arguably the greatest single season by a goalkeeper in the club’s MLS history. He didn’t just lead the league; he dominated it:
- Awards: 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and 2025 MLS Best XI.
- Stats: A league-best 77.93% save percentage and a career-high 10 shutouts.
- The Wall: He was the only goalkeeper in MLS to maintain a goals-against average of 1.00 or lower while facing over 140 shots.
A journey of growth
Drafted 7th overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft out of Maryland, Dayne’s rise wasn’t immediate. We watched him cut his teeth on loan with Forward Madison and San Antonio FC before he seized the starting spot during the 2020 playoff run.
Since then, he has been our unquestioned No. 1. Whether it was his legendary 16-save performance against Club Necaxa in the 2024 Leagues Cup or his 2022 MLS All-Star Game MVP honors, Dayne has always been a player for the big occasion. He ends his Minnesota career with over 145 appearances, making him one of the longest-tenured and most impactful players to ever wear the crest.
More than a shot-stopper
Off the pitch, Dayne’s impact was just as significant. His work with Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities through the “Game Changers” program showed a young man dedicated to giving back to the community that embraced him. He wasn’t just Minnesota’s goalkeeper; he was a mentor and a role model for the next generation of athletes in the state.
Looking ahead to 2026
As Dayne moves into free agency, his eyes are undoubtedly set on the 2026 FIFA World Cup. As the likely starter for Canada on home soil, he deserves a platform that continues to challenge him at the highest level.
Thank you, Dayne, for the spectacular saves, the leadership in the locker room, and for always being a class act. Allianz Field won’t feel quite the same without you between the sticks, but we will be cheering you on as you take the world stage next summer.
Once a Loon, always a Loon!
